baby shower for a local family adopting a baby from China. Angela, who I collaborated with, came to me with a pretty detailed idea for the invitations. She wanted 4 illustrations with the translations for the words Journey, Daughter, Mother, and Celebration: an introduction to both languages for the baby and the parents. After the invitations were done, we wanted to create a large series of wine labels that would compliment the theme. For 18 very enthusiastic minutes, I knew I wanted to illustrate a dozen Chinese warriors and emperors for the labels. Big, bulky, moustachioed warriors. 19 minutes into this concept, it became clear that this probably wouldn't be the right way to welcome the arrival of a baby. This was, afterall, supposed to mark the addition of a family member—not some epic ancient battle. Our next idea—which we think might be a better fit—was to create Chinese Zodiac symbols for each wine bottle. As a take-away, each guest got a pair of chopsticks. This series was—to date—one of the most fun designs I've worked on, and seeing each illustration come to life was a thrill. It was a small office of 10 people, and at first we mostly kept to ourselves. She was new to Vancouver, and when I heard that she'd never been to the beach here, we got in my car after work and spent the next year attached at the hip exploring Kits, Maple Ridge, and everywhere in between. Even though we only worked together for a handful of months, and only lived in the same province for a year, she remains one of my most important friends. You know when you meet someone who changes your life? Marsi is that person for me. When she called to ask if I'd be her wedding photographer, I nervously said yes. 1918530 Together with my dear friend, Angela Stephen-Dewhurst, we organized our Bookclub's 2nd Annual Tea Party. While there are never any books, nor tea, there is always plenty of wine at our Bookclub Meetings. This year, inspired by majestic Depression-era Circuses, we decided to throw the Most Spectacular Tea Party of the Century! Months in the planning, we brainstormed, gathered decorations, called each other every time another idea popped in our heads, barely kept in all the secrets from our friends, and unsuccessfully kept secrets from each other. Significantly bigger than last year's Mad Tea Party, this year's Circus was generously hosted by our friend Jennifer in her drool-worthy backyard, and attended by our favourite Circus Freaks. I illustrated 3 characters for the 11" x 17" invitation poster: the World's Strongest Man, the Ringmaster, and the World's Tallest Woman. These characters also made appearances on wine bottles, along with a few other characters, including a fairly accurate self-portrait of myself and Angela on the Clown Label. Labels were printed on glossy 80 LB text, and—to add to the quirkiness of the event—were adhered onto mismatched wine bottles. Not surprisingly, the "Cooch Tent" wine was the first to go... Print: Vancouver 1690664 Hemkund Sahib, in the middle of the Himalayan Mountains in Uttarakhand, India, is one of 5 holy Sikh sites. It's accessible only by foot for 4 months of the year, from June to October, when the snow has receded enough to make the trek possible. Located over 4,300 meters above sea-level, it takes 3 days to complete: a winding path of uneven and rough terrain that's made substantially more difficult by the decreased oxygen levels at such high elevations. The people who live in these mountains rely, annually, on these 4 months of pilgrimage as their only means of income for the entire year. Juice stands, tea stalls and restaurants provide much-needed fuel, and warmth, to the pilgrims. Local men carrying woven baskets on their backs carry either luggage or people who are unable to independently climb on foot, and hundreds of brightly decorated donkeys are available for hire. Women can be seen collecting wood along the way that can later be sold as fuel for fire, and children often go to work with their parents to help make as much money as possible for the year. If it weren't for the spectacular views and the encouragement of complete strangers pushing each other to go further, this would have seemed nearly impossible to complete. I met a young man in his mid-20's who had ditched his group of friends to hold the hand of an 80-year-old woman slowly making her way down the mountain when he saw that she'd been walking alone. Actually, I met a number of young men who were doing the same thing. It was this kindness of strangers that stood out most. Graphic Design for Print: Vancouver 470942 I’ve done lots of work for and with Sher Vancouver—a social and support group for South Asian LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans community). This has been a much-needed movement, bringing awareness to a normally “hush hush” and taboo subject in the community. And while it hasn’t been accepted with open arms by all, it’s a huge step. With such a big South Asian community in the Metro Vancouver area, sitting back and watching ignorance continue to reign wasn’t an option.
